Pharr Public Safety Communications has professional positions for Telecommunicator personnel to receive and dispatch requests for multiple agencies. Telecommunicators process more than 200,000 calls annually and operate complex communications, and computer equipment.

To become a Telecommunicator with Pharr Public Safety Communications, the applicant must have completed the hiring process which includes the following:
    • Pass a typing test with a minimum score of 35 WPM (must pass to continue testing)
    • Pass a General Emergency Communications test (must pass to continue testing)
    • Spelling Test
    • Radio and Call Taking test (must pass to continue testing)
    • Graduated from high school or received a GED
    • Pass Oral Board Interview
    • Pass a psychological
    • Pass a basic physical
    • Pass a drug / substance screening
    • Pass a background investigation

Telecommunicators (sometimes referred to as Dispatchers, Call Takers, or Communications Officers) have a primary responsibility to process calls by answering emergency and non-emergency calls, properly questioning callers utilizing nationally recognized protocol and local policies and procedures, to determine location and nature of emergencies while simultaneously entering the information into the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system.

All newly hired Telecommunicators attend an intensive 8 week Telecommunicator Training Academy. The academy consists of a comprehensive program designed to prepare new Telecommunicators to handle the situations they will encounter ‘on the job’. Internal standard operating procedures, crisis intervention, stress management, and resource availability are only a few of the academy’s offerings. A 40-hr Basic Telecommunicator Course is presented along with other state mandated courses. Training will also include Emergency Medical, Fire, Police Dispatch certification through the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch.

Newly appointed Telecommunicators will be assigned to work any shift, including nights and a high percentage of weekends and holidays.
